The history behind the famous Jefferson cup:Ā Thomas Jeffersonās friend and teacher, George Wythe, passed away in 1806, willing him two silver cups .Ā Preferring a more modern style, he set out to have them redesigned.Ā So he sent them off to Virginia silversmith, John Letelier, instructing him to melt the cups and remake them into a more popular tumbler design.Ā Eight low, round-bottomed cups were crafted and returned to Monticello by 1810.Ā Ā These cups were Jeffersonās family favorites.Ā Certainly your family will love them, too!
